30 October

1946, 30 Oct, the Hanson Locker Plant opened, the owners were Richard 66,1986 and his brother & Roy 74,1996 Hanson who grew up in Gheen. In those days not many people had freezers to store their meat at home. After the locker business slowed down the Hanson brothers started selling furniture and appliances. Dick’s daughter Diane and her husband Mike Suomela bought the business from Dick & Roy. They have expanded the business to include gifts and video rentals.

1995, 30 Oct, the R & J Café was damaged by fire. The building was originally the Phillips 66 service station that was constructed in 1953. Later it was the optical shop owned by Mike Sarazine, then the Culbert Real Estate office. In 1986 Roger & Joan Steward remodeled the building into a café and named it the R & J. They sold to Bill Pasch in 1993. After the fire Jack Luecken bought the place and had a beautiful remodeling job done. He opened it as the Café 53 on 31 Mar 2000. Jack sold to John & Heather (Lindsey) Chaulklin Jr on 1 Sep 2001. The building is now vacant.

1960, 22 Oct. The Farmers & Merchants State Bank of Cook started closing on Saturdays. Banks are not service minded, not only are they closed on Saturday but every time someone has a birthday or a Federal Holiday. I understand they close because other financial institutions are not open, but there are some services they could provide to the public.

Fadum's Hardware, two story building on the left in 1952

1971, 21 Oct, the second story of Hokkanen Gamble store was removed. This had been used as a hotel and a boarding house in the old days. It is one of the older buildings in Cook. It had been a hardware store since Julius Fadum opened in this building in 1936. He sold the business to Ronald & Rosemary Hokkanen in 1964, they sold to Russ Pascuzzi and Mike Picek in 1977 and it was known as the R & M Hardware. Picek’s bought out Russ in 1989 and renamed the place the Hometown Hardware. In 1997 they bought the Makela Hardware business across the street and traded buildings. The Napa Parts store was last located in this vacant building, it was located next to Clark's IGA which was destroyed by fire in 2002.

This is now the Subway Building

1956, 19 Oct, construction started on the new Miller-Chase Furniture building by two Cook businessmen, Walter Miller, owner of the Miller’s Grocery Store and Marvin Chase, owner of the Chase Lumber Yard. The new furniture store opened on 18 Jan 1957 but did not do as well as the owners wanted. Walter’s grocery store burned on 8 Jan 1959 so he moved his grocery business to the furniture store building on 5 Mar 1959. Walter bought out his partner and added to the building. Walter sold his IGA grocery store business to Clark Brenna on 1 Dec 1968. After Clark moved to what is now the Gustafson Motors dealership building on 4 Dec 1973 the Federal Forestry moved into the old Miller-Chase building with their offices. The Forestry moved out in 1992. Tom & Lisa Ojanen bought the building. They opened their Subway Restaurant there on May 22,2002.

Lee & Lloyd Gustafson

1994, 14 Oct, Lloyd & Lee Gustafson moved their Gustafson Motors Ford dealership to the present location on Highway 53. They had been located in downtown since 1946 where their father Gust started the business. Lloyd and Lee have worked their entire lives at this dealership.  They are now selling vehicles to grandchildren of their customers. This is one of the best dealerships to purchase new Ford as their overhead is low, but most of all they are very honest. When they tell you the price that is it, they do not try to revalue the trade-in, or add to the purchase price of the new car. Lloyd passed away on August 2, 2017.

The old Cook Water Tower dismantled today
.

Tuesday, October 5, 2010, the Cook Water Tower was dismantled in a matter of hours, starting at about 0800 this morning. Men climbed the tower with acetylene torches to burn holes in the tank for the cable hooks to attach for lowering the metal. It was interesting to watch how they took the tank apart.

After removing the top in one section they cut the tank in four sections. Then they quartered the base the same way. Apparently these men are not afraid of heights as the tank was over one hundred feet high.

The tank came down without problems as these men are professionals and remove such towers throughout the Nation.

The steel from the tank was cut up on the ground. The scrap was loaded into a roll-off container and hauled to Hibbing by David Udovich. David & Carol (Luecken) Udovich are enterprising business owners from Gheen who operate the Udovich Garbage Collection and Roll-off service, they also have a Timber Company with trucks and other logging equipment. His brother Dennis & Mimi own the Udovich Guide Service of Greaney.
