1987, 30 Nov, the upper story of drug store was removed. The upstairs was once used as office space for a number of businesses. It was the first telephone exchange in 1916 as all the rural telephone lines joined and long distant calls were made there.

.

1989, 30 Nov, the City Council voted to transfer the ownership of the Cook Community Hospital to a Cook Community Hospital District. The hospital needed a tax base and the City did not have the valuation. Also the bond rating of the City was in question as the hospital was considered a liability to the City, as the owner. To finance the construction of the hospital the Voters of the Village of Cook had allowed the Council to bond the City. The Hospital was paid for and in good financial condition. The District has worked well as real estate taxes have subsidized new construction costs over the past years.

Mary Jorgenson was 49, Ken Leding 60, Don Simonson 42, John Musech 54 and Rev. Dennis Morreim was 36 years old at the time of this picture. Mary Petman (Robert 38,1959) Jorgenson passed away in 1991 at the age of 61. Ken Leding passed away in 1995 at the age of 77.  Don Simonson passed in 2015 at the age of 78.

1978, 17 Nov, the new ambulance arrived, it was the second new rig the Cook Fire Department bought. This one was our first modular unit and it cost over $20,000. The first rig we bought was a new 1970 Chevrolet Suburban which cost $8,500. The need for the City to get involved in the ambulance business came when Ken Leding stopped providing service. He had started in the ambulance service when the new Cook Community Hospital opened in 1959. Ken’s first rig was a new 1959 Ford station wagon, later he bought a 1959 Cadillac from the St. Paul Fire Department. Ken had trouble getting paid for his services as many people did not have insurance at that time.

Yours Truly with the 1970 Chevrolet Suburban Ambulance we purchased new in 1970.

Parked in what is now the Post Office parking lot during a Timber Days Parade. The green house belonged to Mordini, the former Brown Building in the back.

1940, 11 Nov, the Great Armistice Day Blizzard. 49 people in Minnesota lost their lives in this snow storm, the worst in the State’s history. Do you remember the Armistice Day Blizzard?

Muriel Simonson with her father Peter Anderson as he shoveled his driveway to the road. In those days he picked up milk from the farmers in the Alango area with his truck and hauled the ten gallon milk cans to the Cook Creamery.

Don with his father Jesse Simonson and the shovel he purchased at Isle, Minnesota during our trip from Nevis, Minnesota to Grantsburg, Wisconsin during the Great Blizzard. We had to stay one night in a hotel at Mora. I am holding the story he wrote about that experience. I was four and a half years old and remember standing in the back seat of Dad's 1940 Ford two-door sedan. At that time Highway 65 was gravel which helped as the "Nobbie Tires" dug down to the gravel. I still have this shovel which now is retired, it is my oldest possession.

1988, 09 Nov, one of the Cook Ambulances rolled on the icy road east of Cook while going on a false call. A deer hunter had tipped his pickup and had left the scene unhurt. So many people call 911 with-out first checking to see if a person is in a damaged vehicle.

The bridge over the Little Fork River is to the right,

the railroad tracks  are in the back

That is the Cook Grade School in the background, built in 1918.

1948, 08 Nov, the Village of Cook Council took action to remove the automobile bridge which was located behind the first gasoline station in Cook, that was owned by Verner Bergren. Mike Picek operated the last gas station on this property which was located closer to the railroad tracks. A picture in the early 1920s does not show this bridge. Does anyone know when the bridge was constructed?

01 November

1943, 01 Nov, the Post Office moved to the Buboltz Grocery Store complex. (the last use of this section was Bob Dickson's Barber Shop) The first post office opened in Cook was in the home of James Field who was also the editor of the first newspaper, the Northland Farmer. It was located between what is now the drug store and the lumber yard alley. The next post office was located in the LeMoine Store with Fred LeMoine the Postmaster, then O.J. Leding in the same store building. Then Dan Hill at his home across the river in what was later known as the Alexander Doroff home, then Leding’s Store again, then the Buboltz store again, then back to Dan Hill’s house, on March 01, 1952 the Brown building. Since August 20,1997 it has been at the present building. In the past the Postmaster was a political appointment.

1956, 01 Nov, the Telephone Block office opened, it is across the alley from the Tire Shop. It was constructed there as it was considered to be the center of town and it is.

1962, 01 Nov, Tony Rupar of Chisholm sold his service station to the Range Co-op Federation. They built a new service station with Sulo & Ruth Jacobson as the managers. Edward Skalko bought the place and had the buildings removed. He opened his newly constructed Lucky Seven Convenience Store there on 4 Jan 1991.
