In Memory of  Martha

Martha C. Schelde, 86, Cook, passed away on Monday, April 28, 2008, at the Cook Hospital.

Martha Catherine Niemisto was born on January 30, 1922, at Chassel, Michigan; the daughter of Matthew and Margaret (Kaspala) Niemisto. She grew up in the Upper Penninsula  of Michigan. She married Sven Liikamma in 1943 and moved to Tacoma, Washington and was widowed in 1947. During the War (World War II) effort, Martha proudly worked in the shipyards and on the aircraft carriers, where she was a machinist’s helper.  She was blessed to find another love and married Joel Liljeblom in 1948, and was once again widowed in 1956. She moved to Cook in 1958, and was united in marriage to Fred Schelde on July 2, 1958. They then moved to Field Township, where she has since resided.   Fred also precedes her in death on April 24, 1989. Martha ran a daycare out of her home for over 25 years, which was a natural extension for her love of children. She was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church in Cook, a longtime member of its choir and Rebecca Circle.  She also was a member of the Kaleva and the Finn Singers, along with being a talented seamstress.

Her longest and best job was that of a devoted homemaker. We will miss her strength, great sense of humor, even when things were difficult, her strong work ethic and her great cooking and baking.  Grandma Martha wonderfully touched all she met and will be dearly missed. She especially loved the time spent with her grandchildren.  Her door was open to all and the coffee pot was always on for visitors.

She is survived by 4 sons, Sven (Dolores) Schelde of Maple Valley, WA,  Fred Schelde Jr. of Wolf Lake, MN, Marty (Ania) Schelde of Cook, and Peter (Julie) Schelde of Angora; 3 daughters,  Shirley (Frank) Hyppa of Cook,  Grace Liljeblom of Cook and Kay (Rick) Lokken of Lake Vermilion-Cook; 1 sister, Ida Johnson of Bay Village, OH,; 24 Grandchildren – with another grandson due in June; 19 Great Grandchildren; her longtime dear friend Shirley Lindgren of Cook; along with numerous nieces and nephews.

In addition to her husbands, she is preceded in death by 2 brothers, William Kaspala and Arnie Laukkanen; and a grandson, Shawn Michael Schelde.

The Montana Cafe building in about 1956

1979, 23 Apr, Miles Johnson & Gary Bamberg 54,2002 bought the Montana Café from Allan & Diane Beaurline who started this café in the old Pajari Maytag Sales building.  Other owners; John & Barb Kuyava & their daughter Laurie Kuyava 24,1985, Sam Mangiere and Pam Dopko,  Dane & Kirsten Frances and Doug Nakari. Kirsten & Fred Reichel, Don & Muriel Simonson. Valerie & Jerry Ohotto are the current owners, since 1996.

2003,April 23, Valerie & Jerry Ohotto had the front of their Montana Cafe re-constructed. This is one of the oldest buildings in Cook, maybe the oldest original building. The building started life as a Meat Market, then a Maytag Sales office. In 1970 Sally Ludlow's brother Allan Beaurline and wife Diane bought the building. That year they established the Montana Cafe, so named as they were actually on their way to the State of Montana to start a Restaurant.

The Cook News Herald was in this building until moving to their present site in 1958. This old building was recently demolished. Larry later moved his business to the new log building he constructed on highway 53. He has since sold that building to a dealer of quilts.

Mary Ann was a devoted mother and grandmother, and enjoyed taking numerous videos and pictures of them in their school and church activities, along with family events. She also enjoyed traveling, which included seeing the estate of her favorite musician, Elvis Presley’s home, Graceland, in Memphis, Tennessee.  She loved gardening especially her begonias and rose bushes

The railroad bridge with the 1917 school house in the background

1927, 20 Apr, the first recorded Little Fork River flood in Cook with pictures. Looks like it was about as high as the 1950 flood. The 1970 flood was the greater as much of the downtown was flooded. The picture above is looking east from downtown. The structure to the left is the railroad water tower as the steam locomotives used a lot of water. The bridge was removed in 1948. The buildings to the right were Herman Kjellbergs gasoline station, last the Russ & Mike's station. the two story building in the background was the school which was constructed in 1918 and torn down in 1957.

2003, 20 Apr. The Sturgeon Store was totally destroyed by fire. It was constructed as the Sturgeon Co-op store. Later owned by Don & Becky Simpson, then Tardy and last by David Cullen.

Simonson bought out Vanne

Don, Frances, Allie, Bill

1978, April 20, Don Simonson bought out his business partner Bill Vanne in the Voyageur Chevrolet dealership. They had  started the dealership in 1973, a year after the death of Bill Lobe. Bill Vanne had worked for the Lobe Chevrolet dealership since 1948 and Don since 1964. Pictured with them were long time car customers Allie & Frances Saari of Alango. They were the first to purchase a new vehicle from Don and Bill in 1973 when they started their business, and again in 1975 when they moved into their new dealership building on highway 53. Don named his dealership Simonson Chevrolet-Olds, Inc. In 1988 Don sold his business to two of his key employees, Lee and Larry Phillips. They sold the dealership to Ken & Mary Waschke in 2007.

April 19

1979, 19 Apr. the Mighty Little Fork River overflowed it’s banks. This is not unusual for Spring with the snow melting and a bit of rain. The usual water level elevation of the river is 1297 feet, but this day it was 1303 which is high but a not a major flood for Cook. The three great floods in Cook have come from heavy rains, not snow melting. Lake Vermilion has an elevation of 1356 so we hope its water stays over the hill.

Chief Simonson and Past Chief Ed Hyppa 83,1999

1980, 01 Apr. Firefighter, Pastor Dennis Morriem fell through a floor into the basement while fighting a house fire in Linden Grove. He and Tom Bakk went in the back door to knock down the fire, they decided to go further and while working their way toward the front door the kitchen floor gave way, Dennis was not hurt. I heard the noise and just knew someone had fallen through the floor. With my flashlight to see through the smoke, I crawled through the front doorway to the hole in the kitchen floor, and there stood Dennis in the basement. I was not able to pull him up as he was in full firefighting uniform, plus he had a Scott air pack on his back. With two more firefighters we were finally able to lift him out, then we sat on a snow bank to catch our breath. Being the Fire Chief I gave the order for no one else to enter the house. With-in half an hour the chimney fell in the basement, where Dennis had been standing.

Dennis was a member of the Lucky 11 hunting lodge in Sturgeon, and we honor him every deer season with a graveside prayer ... he is greatly missed by his fellow hunters/relatives as he was the camp "butcher".  Doug Larsen
